Review: Coming Home by Priscilla Glenn

Title: Coming Home

Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | The Book Depository

Leah Marino hasn’t been on a date in two years. After discovering the man she loved had manipulated and deceived her, she refuses to even entertain the idea of a relationship. Instead, she focuses her attention on taking care of her family, a role she’s assumed since the death of her mother and the one place she knows her kindness won't be taken advantage of again.
When a nostalgic trip back to her childhood home results in a chance encounter with Danny DeLuca, a smart-mouthed mechanic who’s as attractive as he is mysterious, Leah's carefully cultivated walls begin to crumble. She finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Danny, despite his unreliable behavior and mixed signals.
But Danny has a secret...
One that could shake Leah's already precarious foundation and bring her world crashing down around her. Suddenly, she's faced with an incredibly difficult decision--is she willing to risk everything for the chance at finding the love she's always wanted? Or are some obstacles just too big for the heart to overcome?

Priscilla Glenn is a fantastic author and don’t let this review tell you otherwise, okay? Because there will be some ranting, but let me tell you this: BACK TO YOU—Priscilla’s debut novel is one of my absolute favorite novels and Emancipating Andie was a good read as well. So these little occasional, very mild rants that are waiting for you in this review? Don’t take them that seriously ;)

Review: Emancipating Andie by Priscilla Glenn

Title: Emancipating Andie

Ever since the one time Andie Weber threw caution to the wind - and paid the price for it - she’s learned that it’s safer and smarter to live life playing by the rules. Now she’s got a great apartment, a steady job, and a wonderful boyfriend in Colin; he’s sweet, stable, and essentially perfect – except maybe for the fact that his best friend is Chase.
Chase McGuire lives his carefree, unstructured life strictly for himself. Dripping sarcasm and oozing wit, he refuses to censor his feelings or opinions for anyone, making no apologies for either and wearing his abrasiveness like a badge of honor. No one has ever gotten under Andie’s skin the way Chase does – and vice versa.
So when Andie and Chase find themselves forced to take a two-day road trip together, they are already dreading an inevitable all-out war. But as the trip progresses, and the undeniable friction that has always defined their relationship slowly begins to wear away their preconceived notions of each other, Andie and Chase discover they both have a lot to learn about life, courage, happiness, and the age-old battle between logic and love.

Back to You was one of my favorite reads of 2012 and I cannot praise that book enough. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Priscilla Glenn has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary authors. Her books are filled with emotion and heartbreak in addition to life, love and laughter.

“Life is much more enjoyable when you're surrounded by people who just accept you for you.”

The story. Andie is an adorable MC who happens to be in a serious relationship with a very decent guy. She meets his privileged friends at a house party and gets locked up in a wine cellar with the worst guy she can possibly imagine – Chase McGuire. He infuriates her to her bones. Andie expects to never see him again. Until.. They all attend to a wedding and she has to drive him there. Expect a catastrophe to happen.

My thoughts. You could seriously cut the tension with a knife in this one. Tension in romance, suspense of what’s next to come, the little things that one does not dare to talk about but what occupy one’s mind. It was intense! However, even though the first part was so so so good, it got a little boring for me at some point. The last 20% were fantastic though. Emancipating Andie was full on temptation, butterflies; freedom to breathe, love and live.

As for the characters, I absolutely loved Chase as a love interest. It’s not that I didn’t like Colin, I sure did, but he didn’t push Andie to reach for her dreams nor did he push her to open up about her dreams. When one’s in a relationship, it should be easy to talk about these things, but in this case Andie didn’t dare to speak about her true wishes to Colin. She was embarrassed and that speaks volume. Chase, however, got her to talk and through that they formed a connection deeper than Andie and her boyfriend. The love triangle was inevitable and I liked how there was no cheating in it. We knew it'd get messy with these three, but Andie pulled her big-girl-pants on and did what she had to do in order to make this right – good for her.

I had a tough time with rating this one. I gave Back to You 5 stars since it was one of my favorite books I have ever read. It’s hard to live up to that. Since it didn’t, I can’t give Emancipating Andie 5 stars. Also, the fact that I was a little bored throughout a part of it in the middle, I had to lower the rating another notch. Still, I cannot wait for something else by Priscilla and her writing in general was absolutely marvelous and beautiful. She is definitely an author to explore.

Tour and Giveaway: Back to You by Priscilla Glenn

EEEEK!! I'm so excited for this. Ugh.. Okay, I need to calm myself down *inhales and brings hands down slowly*. OK, done! Now, now.. A few months ago I read this fabulous novel Back to You by this very talented author Priscilla Glenn. I'm forever grateful for Jenni @ Alluring Reads for recommending it. It was truly uh-mazing! If you want to read my review, you can do it here (no spoilers of course, as always). Oh, you haven't heard of this book? Well, let me introduce it to you then.

When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.

Or that it would end so painfully.

Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.

As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?

*In a sing-alike voice* I adooored this book! It was sweet like a spoonful of sugar, but at the same time emotional and a little devastating - right up my alley, to tell you the truth.

A Character Profile

Today I get to share a character profile with you and let me tell you - this little angel is one of the best parts of this novel. She is so smart, innocent and adorable that I just wanted to squeeze her into a hug and never let go. Ha.

Name: Erin Delaney
Age: 3 ½
Physical description: “God, she looked so much like him. The eyes were exactly the same, eyes that were so dark they were almost , except hers were large and round with childhood, ringed by a fringe of dark lashes. She had the same full lips, the same dark hair, only hers fell in silky ringlets that brushed the tops of her shoulders. She was gorgeous.”
Quote: “Even though you’re disappointed. You didn’t forget to still love him, did you?”
Best quality: endearing/innocent
Worst quality: can be overly shy

Giveaway

Also, US/Can peeps can participate in this giveaway. (3) Three signed print copies of Back to You. As always, INTL people are also welcome to participate, if you have a US/Can shipping address. GOOD LUCK to everyone!

I liked the first cover quite a lot actually. Since the story was quite dark at times, that yellow sunshiny cover gave me hope that it'll have beautiful, bright and sweet moments as well. It sure didn't disappoint. This cover is more intimate and Michael is pretty much exactly like I envisioned him. Also, the neutral coloring is right up my alley and I'm really glad this is the new cover for this gorgeous book that touched me deeply.

I find most the books I read via Goodreads so when all of my friends there suddenly started reading this one, I felt intrigued. I wasn’t immediately captured by the plot, because there are lots of similar books out there, but everyone seemed to love it. However, since none of them had written a review, I wasn't so sure. Then Jenni @ Alluring Reads mentioned it in one of her hauls. I tweeted her asking if I should read it and she said yes. Well.. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Jenni, for the recommendation! It was fantastic!

“See, Red? When life hands you lemons, you know what you gotta do now.”
“Wow,” Lauren said. “Yes, Mr. Cliché, I know what I have to do. I make lemonade.”
“No,” he said. “You scream, ‘Fuck you, lemons!’”
Lauren whipped her head toward Michael, her eyes wide, and she quickly scanned the park, forgetting for the moment that it was the dead of winter and no one else was there.
“God,” she said with a horrified laugh.
“And then you throw those goddamn lemons into oncoming traffic, and you go do what you want to do.”

Back to You was somewhat a new experience for me, because it alternated between two POVs – Michael’s as well as Lauren’s – but also between different events in the past and present, so I basically read something for adults, young adults and middle grade. It was weird, but oooh, so exciting! The story starts in the year 2011 when Lauren starts a new job at a day care and learning center. She got me hooked right away with her charismatic personality, enjoyable remarks and friendly, positive attitude.

As the story progresses, we see Michael, her best friend and crush from high school. Michael has had a tough life and he’s been told that he destroys everything he touches, so why not be that destructive person and give hell to everyone who dares to look or talk to him? He acts like a really tough guy, which he is, but at the same time he has that hidden vulnerability to him. Once Lauren sees that, she cannot help but to not put up with his BS and offer him the one thing he needs the most – love.

It’s easy to tell that, whether it’s in the past or present, they both love each other in their own ways, but you can also see that they’ve both been hurt unbelievably much. How can one come back from that? How can one forgive and move on when they don’t even know the whole story? As the truth unrolls, emotions boil up to the highest point possible. Once it all explodes, there’s no telling how it’ll all end. In addition, it’s not only their lives they’re talking about, they have to take someone else into account and that may or may not be the only thing that saves them, their friendship, their love. Can time heal all wounds? That's what Michael and Lauren are about to find out.

Sidenotes: I have to mention that even though I'm completely, 110% team Michael, I fell in love with Adam as well. I hope he'll have his own story one day. He was the sweetest thing and if Michael wasn't Michael, I would have been proudly a team Adam supporter. Another thing I'd like to say is that as soon as there was that Coldplay (one of my favorite bands!!) song mentioned, I knew exactly what song it was and it couldn't have been more perfect

“What’s muscle memory?” Erin asked before Lauren could react to his comment.
He pursed his lips, thinking of a way to explain it. “Well, sometimes if something is really important to you, it gets stuck in your body,” he said, poking her ribs and making her laugh. “So even if your mind thinks that it’s gone, it’s still in there, kind of hiding inside of you, just waiting for you to remember. It never goes away.”

I’m surprised that it was Priscilla’s first published novel, because it was so freaking amazing!! It gave me butterflies, made me cry like a baby, laugh like a lunatic and gave me lots to think about. My only question right now is: Where can I get some more? This was absolutely incredible and I cannot possibly tell you how much I’m looking forward to reading something else by Ms. Glenn. Stunningly exquisite!
