My journey with Colleen Hoover and NA lit started in May 2012. Slammed is one of my favorite character growth and family-related stories, Point of Retreat is one of my favorite guy POV’s and sob-my-heart-out books. I love Colleen’s writing and Will, Lake, Caulder, Kel, Eddie, Gavin and everyone else so much. While I was happy to be back in the Slammed world and felt like this was such a neat way to give the other POV of the same story, I was slightly underwhelmed.

Book Haul #27

Hey guys! My post should have went up this morning, but since I was seeing Catching Fire today, I decided to post this afterwards to share my feels because there were so many!!!! Oh, my, you guys! This movie... I have no words. I literally thought that Twilight had doomed every single YA adaption, but no! This movie held its own and I loved every moment of it. I read the books ages ago and didn't re-read them because I didn't want to be disappointed by the movie, but I'm pretty sure that even if I had read 'em, I still would have enjoyed it thoroughly. It was so good that I wouldn't change a thing. I laughed, cried and was anxious to see what happens next and it was just.. fantastic! Anyhow, you're here for my haul, so let's get on with it, shall we? Review: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

My true love story (lol) with Ms. Colleen Hoover started with this very same book. It is one of the most magnificent, brilliant, gorgeous, sob-my-eyes-and-heart-out books that I have ever come across. What else is there to say? Nothing. However, this isn’t much of a review if I just leave it at that so I’ll count down all the little things I adored in this book even when reading it the 4th time. That’s right. So here we go!

“If I were a carpenter, I would build you a window to my soul. But I would leave that window shut and locked, so that every time you tried to look through it all you would see is your own reflection. You would see that my soul is a reflection of you.”

Whereas the first book was from Layken’s point of view, this time we will see things through Will’s eyes. We get some of his thoughts on what happened in Slammed, but mostly it’s a new story following the events of what happened in Slammed. Point of Retreat has given me more tears than any other book I’ve read before. It’s filled with immensely powerful emotional scenes – especially the hospital ones.

With this novel I truly realized how much Lake, Will and the rest of the co has had to grow up throughout the past year. I wouldn’t wish that much hurt and heartache to anyone. The amount of loved ones these kids have lost has marked and scarred them forever, but they still live on while loving, caring, supporting each other. So what did I love so much about this one? I’ll tell you what: slams, characters, story, growth, fights, laughs, sucks and sweets – absolutely everything. There wasn’t a thing I didn’t love.

With all that said, Point of Retreat is without doubt one of the best contemporaries I have ever read. This series is just so original and unique and I am in love with its characters, story and meaning. Every single line in this book is quotable and butterfyling perfect! I have said it a thousand times and I’ll say it again: if you haven’t read this series, please pick it up and give it a chance. It may very well happen that it’ll rock your world (multiple times) as it did mine.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars with a badge of brilliance on top of that

Summer Lovin' 2013 Read-A-Thon: You're The One That I Want

It's day 2 and so far I've started Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter which is surprisingly awesome. Totally my kinda humour and I've laughed quite a bit even though I'm not that far. Also, there have been quite a few surprises already regarding the plot so that's awesome. Since I have it in paperback, I read it at home and I have the first two book in a combined edition and I don't want to bring it to work so I brought my Kindle instead and during lunch break I started Thousand Words by Jennifer Brown which is also pretty interesting. I have heard so many good things about Jennifer's work and I'm excited to finally give one of her books a try. I'm only 15% in though, so we'll see how it goes.

So for today's participation post we have a topic of our 5 must-reads for summer. Oh boy, I have so many books I'd love to name, but here're the first five that come to mind. Review: Slammed by Colleen Hoover

I didn’t have reviews for this series and since This Girl just came out, I wanted to re-read ‘em for the 4th time. Yep, 4!! Yes, in all honesty, Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite authors and even though my heart wants to give Colleen’s first novel 5 stars, I can’t because Point of Retreat is better and since PoR deserves all the 5 stars in the world, I’m going with a 4. Anyhow, here’re my thoughts.

“Don't take life too seriously. Punch it in the face when it needs a good hit. Laugh at it.”

The story. Layken aka Lake moves away from Texas with her Mom and little brother Kel. She’s 18 and a high school student. Kel and Lake lost their Dad recently and now the Cohens are trying to start fresh. Opposite of them live Will Cooper, 21 at the time, and his little brother Caulder. Will asks Lake out and so it begins. Soon they discover a huge obstacle that will tear them apart. Lake will get devastating news about her Mother, deal with a broken heart and grow up sooner than she expected.

My emotions. With every re-read, it just get better and better. The poems, the tears, the emotions, the story – it’s just all so very good. Carving pumpkins, detention slips, that stupid gnome – I love everything about this story. The main thing I adore though is Lake’s growth, the bonds between family and friends and of course the slams. I have never been a particular fan of poetry, but these poems are so relatable and fresh that I cannot help but enjoy them.

I recommend these books to every contemporary fan out there. Seriously! You don’t know what you’re missing out on. Yes, Lake can be a bit stubborn at times and the back-and-forth with Will and Lake may be a bit confusing and infuriating, however, the story and the feelings are what make the book and Point of Retreat, the sequel, is ultimately one of the best books ever written. Plus, it’s from Will’s POV so yeah.. If you haven’t read Slammed yet, give it a try soon. Forever recommend!

Top 3 Bookish Moments of February

I can't believe it's March already and two months of 2013 are already over. Time flies at the speed of light. So what are my three bookish moments of February, you ask? Hmhhh.. Let me think. I believe these sum them up:

Finishing the Hush Hush Saga. 

Ugh, it's so frustrating that it's finally over, but it feels good, too, you know? I kind of lost hope when I read Crescendo (Hush Hush #2) and was afraid that maybe Becca doesn't have that much to say anymore in Finale (Hush Hush #4), but it was beautiful and emotional. You can read all about my thoughts in my review which I hope will be up before March ends.

Announcements by my favorite Ms. Collen Hoover.

Will's story (Slammed #3) will be out in April yay! Hopeless' paperback will be out soon, too. Oh, and the best thing eveeeerrr?? Holder POV of Hopeless will be out in July *dies* Yes, you heard me! *does a win-dance: uh-uh-uh   uh-uh-uh   uh-uh-uh-uh-uhuhhhh* You can read all about Holder's thoughts on it here.

Cover reveal for The Fiery Heart. 

Okay, let's get one thing straight: I am not, unfortunately, a fan of that cover, but I am glad that it was revealed. I think it's growing on me the more I look at it, but I'm still not a fan. I haven't read The Indigo Spell yet, but I will when we're closer to The Fiery Heart. This cover reveal means that TFH is really freaking coming and Adrian POV, baby!!!!! Win! *swoons* Yes! This is just uh-mazeballs! What do you think of that cover, though? Like? Dislike? Why so?

Top 3 Bookish Moments of December

December was a really quiet time for me in the sense of books, but I still managed to pick my top three out of the few that stood out for me (in no particular order):

1. I received my copy of Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick, yay! Hush Hush was my first ever angel book and I got pretty much addicted to Patch, to put it mildly *blushes* so yeah.. I'm sad to let him go, but I'm anxious to see what's gonna happen next for Patch and Nora in this final installment of the saga.
2. Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout came out in December. Wohooo!! I have a paperback on my shelf already (though, now that I think about it, I think I haven't featured it in any of my hauls O_O) and I'm excited to read it. I think I'm gonna read it in May/June though, because there's supposedly a cliffhanger like no other. Can't wait to devour Origin already. Daemon POV, peeps!! Eeek!!!
3. Reading Hopeless by Colleen Hoover and The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay. Finishing a year of great reads with these amazing contemporary books couldn't have been any better. I think these two books are must-reads for every book lover out there. Even if we agree to disagree I'm always excited to see what people think of them.

Review: Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever. Recommended for readers 17+ due to sexual content, harsh language and heavy subject matter.

Let me start by saying that this year has been full of great reads and discovering new amazing authors. One of them was Colleen and her Slammed series. I’m beyond happy and ecstatic for her success and this is only the beginning of it. If you haven’t read about Layken Cohen and Will Cooper, then you most certainly must! Now on to Hopeless. There’re no words in this world to tell you how much I adored this devastating story. It’s dark, edgy, magical and romantic. I loved every single second of it! Oh, and this book had the best. freaking. first. (non-)kiss. everrrr!!!

Being adopted isn’t really a stigma I’ve ever had to overcome. I’ve never been embarrassed by it, ashamed of it, or felt the need to hide the fact. But the way Holder is looking at me right now, you would think I just told him I was born with a penis. He’s staring at me uncomfortably and it makes me fidget. “What? You’ve never met anyone who was adopted?”

The plot. It sure does feel like a hopeless story the more the spine of the story cracks, but you cannot help but root for Sky as she discovers things about herself that one couldn’t possibly begin to imagine. The story takes time to progress, but about 66% through, Colleen starts throwing these punches at you and you don’t know how to protect yourself from them. I figured out some of the plot twists and had my doubts, but in the end, I was taken aback by its cruelness, brutality and darkness. I didn’t think Colleen, always lovely and funny, had it in her, but I’m glad she chose to share Sky’s story with the rest of the world.

The characters. Sky. Where in the world did this girl come from? Where did you hide her all this time, Colleen?? I felt for this broken girl who wasn’t even aware that she had been taken into pieces in the first place. Now, with Holder, she’s discovering the deepest secrets of her past, her soul and she doesn’t know where to begin the healing process, because as soon as she begins to manage the drawbacks of the previous shocking reveal, another comes, completely out of nowhere, straight at her with a vengeance. And trust me these things were meaner than the queen bee in any high school! Which brings me to Breckin. I heart you!! Thank you, for keeping my girl safe and sound, painting a smile on her face when she needed it the most, being there for her.

Then we have Holder. Le sigh. I can assure you that Will is still my number one male lead that Colleen has created, but Holder sure made everything in his power to not be the runner-up. It wasn’t a fair competition, because Point of Retreat is probably one of the top five books I have ever read. Ever!! However, Holder with his stunning persona, attractive looks *aaaahh, them dimples!!!!*, secrets and protective stance over Sky made me swoon like a crazy person, haha. I adore that even though the main focus was about Sky’s growth and unlocking her past, we also got to see Holder develop as a person and heal some of his wounds that have hurt him for such a long time. (On a side note: I’m writing this review while my Dad is watching the 1/8 finals of European League in basketball and he is giving me evil glares, because I’m all giggles due to thinking about Holder). 

"And once again in my new world full of heartache and lies, this hopeless boy somehow finds a way to make me smile."

I wish I could quote the whole book to you, because every word was made of pure gold. It's a story you cannot put a price tag on, because it will haunt you for the longest time. The characters, especially Sky, are so easy to relate to and their sadness, happiness, goals and failures become a part of you in a way you wouldn't have imagined. I'm in awe of how beautiful, broken, dark and twisted this story is. I didn't expect anything from Colleen to be as good as her Slammed series, but this gives Slammed and Point of Retreat a run for their money. Whenever Sky felt like she couldn't breathe, I felt like the air was being knocked out of my lungs. She rarely cries, but when she did, I did too. Hopeless is enjoyable as well as devastating, but I wouldn't trade the minutes I spent on reading this book for anything. A definite recommend!

Top Ten Books That Make You Think (About The World, People, Life, etc.)

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

This is my favorite book of all time. Absolute favorite! Number one. Best. If I were to pick one book to save from apocalypse, this would most definitely be it. Ugh. I just LOVE this book so butterflying much! If you haven’t read it, I command  advise you to pick this up immediately. It’s one of those books that stays with you forever and never leaves your heart or mind completely. It’s breathtaking how well Lee has described human nature and how gorgeous meanings can be found behind these complicated thoughts. I just love, love, love this book. ♥

The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher 

This book definitely got me thinking about the choices we make or don’t (want to) make and consequences thereafter. It’s all about choices in this novel and I literally thought about it afterwards for at least two days and couldn’t get my thoughts out of this tornado that was going on in my head.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry 

Yes, it’s a children’s book, but it’s full of philosophical and suprisingly simple, but extremely important thoughts on life and people. I love it! It’s a very short book and there are beautiful illustrations beside these smart ideas and thoughts. What an absolute joy to read!

Arc de Triomphe by Erich Maria Remarque 

I feel like as opposed to previous eras where one could  easily become sufficient in a chosen vocation, nowadays you’re nothing without a paper, stating you’ve finished Uni and gotten not only BA (more known as unfinished Uni degree) but MA as well, in your hand. In this book the male protagonist doesn’t own a passport so even though he is the best surgeon and saves lives on a daily basis, he cannot contribute to the society in the light of day since he is an immigrant. He is nothing without a piece of paper and I feel like our society is drifting towards that direction, too. No paper proving to have a degree from Uni (usually) equals no future.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I absolutely adore this book and it’s one of my favorite of all time. Have read it like at least 5 times and every time I do, I find something new to think about. Pride is one of people’s worst enemies, I know it’s mine. I don’t like to ask for help or feel like I’m failing. Who does? I don’t think there are that many people who do. Moreover, prejudice is a nasty beast, too, if you ask me. Judging a book by its cover or by other people’s opinions is quite ofthen the case in life.

Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover 

Man, how I love this book! Contemporary YA fiction is exciting and easy to follow, but a lot of the times it falls short on a deepful meaning behind the words. PoR has a very special place in my heart. I’m so unbelievably stubborn and it's easy to relate to Lake since she is stubborn, too. She puts Will through tests and the poor guy is doing his best to keep up with everything and prove to her that she is THE one for him and vice versa. When the final 1/3 of the book started, I was taken aback by a huge shock and Oh. My. Freaking. God. It was intense and got me thinking about life in general for days after I finished reading it.

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult 

I am not actually a fan of this book in general, there were just too many things that bothered me, but it got me thinking about family problems and how we don’t take time to listen to each other, are so hung up on work, school and solving big problems that we don’t take notice of the small ones right in front of us that are in desperate need of our attention. In addition, the ending was a huge shock and I just wanted to stab this book in the heart with my tears.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger 

I always think of this book when someone talks about time travel. What if it really is possible? What if by choosing to do one thing you could change many lives? What if that changes the balance of the whole world? It’s crazy to think about and this book leaves you breathless with the writing style, plotline, ideas and everything else possible.

Chasing Nikki by Lacey Weatherford 

It’s such a great contemporary YA book and in addition to falling in love with the characters, after reading the book you feel like you’ve been to a class of life. Definitely got me thinking about our existence, love, life etc.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 

It’s a great example of how the society is obsessed with reality TV, looks, wealth, fame etc. We are so hung up on material values that quite often we don’t even realize what actual wealth is: loving someone, being loved, home, support, kindness, selflessness, bravery. I love the hidden meanings behind the words and different scenes. I think one can define this piece of work as a satire of the modern society. In addition to a gripping story with kick-ass characters it gives you a lot to think about.

Top Ten Books for People Who Like Adult Contemporary (or Mature YA) Books

Thoughtless by S. C. Stephens

Don’t fancy reading about cheating, but this book is so much more than that. What if the person you fall in love with, while in a commited relationship, is your soulmate? What if even when you love the person you’re with more than anything in the world is not your soulmate? What if friends grow to lovers and lovers grow to friends? What if you’re the only person in the world one can trust their whole life with? This is one of the best emotional stories I’ve read and I can’t even begin with how much I love Kellan Kyle. Ugh.. Definitely a recommend!

Love Unscripted by Tina Reber 

Haven’t we all dreamed of dating a handsome movie star? Well, Taryn hasn’t, but she’s going to get the chance to date one. Ryan and Taryn are the cutest little couple and they’re so great together. The only thing is that he’s Robert-Pattinson-famous and can’t even to a pub, shop, theatre, hotel without screaming fans already waiting for him. They follow him everywhere. Moreover, he’s surrounded by paparazzi 24/7. And there’s the fact that someone from his past is trying to break him up with Taryn. Can they take the heat, survive under the pressure and get their happily ever after?

Slammed by Colleen Hoover

Well, I didn’t read this one to be exact. Okay.. I read it, but I just went through it and didn’t read it correctly. But, I read “Point of Retreat“ which is the sequel to this book from Will’s POV (it’s not a parallel story to “Slammed“, it’s a sequel) and it was absolutely amazzzingg!! I loved  every second out of the sequel and I bet you will, too. Will’s just brilliant, sweet & hot and crazy in love with Lake. Not a chapter went by without me crying over this book. Also, if you're a fan of poetry, this book will melt your heart!

Bared to You by Sylvia Day

It's is like a better version of “Fifty Shades of Grey“. I know a lot of people love FSoG. In my opinion, it was okay, but the writing was poor and yeah.. Something was missing, although, Christian Grey is one hell of a guy! There isn’t that much kinky stuff in "Bared to You" and it was more to my taste than FSoG. It's is a story about two broken souls trying to commit to each other, but when they’re as broken as they are, will their relationship be as broken as well? Can this relation even exist?

Gabriel’s Inferno by Sylvain Reynard

This book is somewhat similar to BtY and FSoG since the male lead is more experienced and has fooled around while the heroine is more laid back. “Gabriel’s Inferno“ differs from the previous two books due to being more intellectual. There’s comparison to Dante and Beatrice and their lovestory which is similar to Gabriel’s and Julia’s. Also, this book doesn’t involve that much sex (while the sequel is supposedly more steamy in this category). I loved that Julia was very independent.

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Have I mentioned already that I love Jamie McGuire and Travis Maddox? I cannot possibly waint for “Walking Disaster“ (BD from Travis’ POV) to hit the stores! Travis, what the heck did you do to me? I love him. I love this story and I love, love, love Abby, Shepley and America (best freaking bff everrr!!). There’s fighting, drinking, dancing, sex, love, crying, laughing and friendship like no other. It’s really a beautiful disaster and either ment to blossom or end up in the ruins.

Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Ever heard of Rose Hathaway? What about Dimitri Belikov? Or Adrian Ivashkov? Oh, you have? Well, that’s just great, because Georgina Kincaid is like the grown version of kick-ass Ms. Hathaway and she’s a succubus trying to live a normal life in Seattle. She’s got the greatest friends who, of course, are demonic (and angelic) and make as sarcastic jokes as Adrian, she can change her appearence with little effort and has the greatest sex life. However, she’s graving for normality and stability. When she meets her favorite author – Seth Mortensen – she falls head over heels without knowing it herself. There’s also Roman – a handsome and exciting guy who she also ends up falling in love with. These two relationships are totally different. Who will she choose? Will she make her decision before it’s too late? Will she even make one? In addition to her love life you get to see how she kicks ass in her demonic life and read some one-liners that crack you up for minutes.

The Moreno Brothers series by Elizabeth Reyes

Looking for a hot-blooded stunning brothers (and their friends) who are protective as hell over their love interests? They’re sweet, honorable, strong, hot, romantic and get easily heated. They’re the Morenos: Angel, Alex, Sal and Angel’s friends Eric and Romero. They’re so similar, but at the same time so different. It’s a pretty fun series with some sad moments and I bet you’ll love all of these five men if you give them a chance (my favorites are Alex, Sal and Romero). The first and the third one are more mature YA, but the other three definitely fall to the adult contemporary romance category.

Easy by Tammara Webber

I haven’t read this one, but I own a copy and want to read it so badly already. I’ve heard only great things about “Easy“, especially Lucas. I’d love to read it ASAP!

The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher

I don't even have the words to describe how unbelievably mad this book made me. Or how sad. Or how happy. I mean.. I gave this book a three on goodreads, beacuse I absolutely hated this book so I couldn't possibly give it a five. But I couldn't give it a one either, because I absolutely loved it. It was so, so heartbreaking, so sweet, so fun, so emotional, so traumatizing. It was a great book. Even more, it was a fantastic book! It left me speechless. I was drowning in the ocean I had created with my own tears whil I was reading this book. It was so effed-up and so.. Eh, I don't even know what else to say, just read it! You won't regret it. The main thing I loved about it is that every choice we make matters and we ourselves are the cause of our happiness (or sadness). I loved this books so much and hated it so much that.. Yeah, no words. Read it!
